Daniel de Zeeuw: The Politics of Authenticity

06Mar2015 13:00 - 16:00

Event

NB We will meet from 13.00 to 16.00 hours in the Oudemanhuispoort building in room A1.18C, which is very close to our usual location. In a week where all kinds of authenticity and inauthenticity are stirring headlines about the UvA, the next session of the Film and Philosophy seminar will be dedicated to Marshall Berman’s classic The Politics of Authenticity: Radical Individualism and the Emergence of Modern Society (1970).

We will welcome as our guest Daniel de Zeeuw, who is currently working on his dissertation on the politics and aesthetics of online anonymity as a PhD student at ASCA.

He will present the text by Marshall Berman in relation to his own research, as a springboard for further discussion. In preparation, we ask that you read three excerpts from The Politics of Authenticity: Radical Individualism and the Emergence of Modern Society (Verso, 1970/2009): the Foreword and Introduction (p. xi-xxxii), “A New Politics: The Authentic Citizen” (p. 200-228) and Conclusion (p. 311-325). Should you be very pressed for time, we recommend concentrating on the introductions and conclusion. All texts are available under Documents in the blackboard group.
