workshop data science day 2021
Monique Kooijmans

The University Library is looking for researchers who are interested in becoming certified Carpentry instructors. Candidates will undergo specialist training of a few days to prepare you to teach workshops autonomously. As an instructor you commit yourself at least three days a year to transfer your knowledge to others. The next two-day training sessions will take place in July and September.

Who are we looking for?

You are a UvA researcher or staff member with an interest in teaching workshops for other researchers on programming or data science skills. You are prepared to commit yourself to this at least three days a year. You have some experience or affinity with shell, git, SQL, Python, R, OpenRefine or spreadsheet software. You certainly do not need to be an expert! The Carpentry community welcomes beginners who would like to expand their knowledge, because transferring the knowledge you have right from the start is a great way to learn. That said, candidates who have previously attended a Carpentry workshop are preferred. Alternatively, you could consider registering as a helper to support participants and the instructor during Carpentry workshops. That way, you can find out if this is the right fit for you.

What will you get in return?

  • You will expand your technical and digital knowledge and reinforce it by teaching.
  • You will gain teaching experience and become acquainted with evidence-based tools to use in your teaching.
  • You will acquire skills that will come in handy in any discipline or field.
  • You will enhance your professional reputation and broaden your network.

Visit the website of The Carpentries for an overview of the benefits.

Becoming a Carpentry instructor helped me to progress in code-related matters as well as improved my teaching skills. Perhaps one of the great aspects of becoming an instructor and teaching at workshops is to meet local peers from the Netherlands and Europe. This often results in new ideas, collaborations and help me to keep a growth mindset. Dr. Marc Galland, Support Data Analyst, Green Life Sciences/SILS, Carpentry instructor

About The Carpentries

The Carpentries is an American not-for-profit organisation and global community of software engineers, data scientists and librarians who develop and teach workshops on programming and data science. Are you interested in attending a workshop? There are regular online workshops. In addition, the University Library intermittently offers Carpentry workshops on location.

The University Library and digital skills

Research is increasingly becoming digital and data-driven. If you want to make the most of the new digital opportunities, good digital skills are essential. The Carpentries offers a great way to acquire them. The workshops are taught worldwide and are highly rated. That is why the UvA has joined The Carpentries and the University Library aims to offer these workshops on behalf of the UvA on a regular basis.
