I am Assistant Professor in Digital and Visual Media Analysis at the Department of Media Studies of the University of Amsterdam. My research interests revolve around visual cultures and methodologies, as well as the potential harms visual content can cause, such as image-based sexual abuse, a specific type of technology-facilitated gender-based violence. I approach these research interests at the intersection of digital sociology and platform studies, with a sensibility towards intersectionality.
I am currently working on a project investigating how AI technologies are reshaping gender-based violence and contributing to new forms of objectification of gendered bodies. In a related line of work, I research AI-generated content production, circulation and moderation on social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok, focusing on how generative AI reshapes practices of content creation and cultural production, and fosters specific AI imaginaries of gender, race, and class.
I am the author of several scientific articles and book chapters, and I am a co-author of two books in the field of digital sociology: The Platformisation of Consumer Culture. A Digital Methods Guide (Routledge, 2024) and “Donne tutte puttane". Revenge porn e maschilità egemone (Durango Edizioni, 2021, trans. "Women are all whores". Revenge Porn and Hegemonic Masculinities).
At the UvA, I teach and coordinate courses in Digital Methods and Digital Ethnography (BA level), for which I also design teaching materials and activities. Additionally, I teach seminars related to themes of visibility, invisibility, and inequality in digital societies, such as my Media Theory Seminar titled “Ways of Seeing in the Age of Algorithms and Visibility” (MA level).
My work extends beyond academia through collaborations with NGOs, student organisations and public institutions, addressing gender-based violence and platform governance. I have conducted research for governmental bodies such as the Dutch Ministry of Internal Affairs, delivered lectures and workshops for organisations including Consent@UvA, ActionAid and Differenza Donna, and served as an expert consultant for EU-funded projects.
