Corina Apostol, lecturer in Art History, is currently working with students of the Master's in Museum Studies on a project around the redevelopment of the Kartini Room. The project, titled 'When Silence Speaks', aims to produce, among other things, an art installation. For this, one of the artists, Daisy Ranoe, is looking for people who carry or live with the tension between “coloniser” and “colonised”.

Wanted: people who embody colonial duality

For an art installation in the Kartini-zaal at the UvA, I’m looking for people that either embody or live with the tension of being both the ‘colonizer’ and the ‘colonized’.

For example:

  • People with a mixed background (e.g. Indonesian-Dutch, Congolese-Belgian, Marrocan-French, etc.);
  • People from formerly colonized areas that now live in the country of the former colonial power;
  • Couples or families in which these cultural or historical traces come together.

The art installation will be a large collage against a wall, filled with pictures and quotes of people that embody the aforementioned duality. I’'m looking for both pictures and people that are willing to be interviewed.

Does the above sound familiar to you, and do you want to share pictures or stories? I’d be happy to hear from you via info@daisyranoe.com! In case you know people that will recognize themselves in this duality, please do feel free to forward this message.
