Event details of Vincent Moon's Live Cinema
Date
19 October 2024
Time
21:00

Vincent Moon will perform a live improvisation set with his film and music recordings of enchanting rituals, dance, and music from around the world.

Navigating the realms of documentary filmmaking, ethnographic research, sound design, and experimental cinema, this performance reveals the poetry at the heart of personal and collective rituals, while highlighting cinema's potential to induce altered states of mind and perception. Moon's live performances echo the trance states seen in the ceremonies he documents, circulating, modifying, and transmitting these energies to the screen, guiding the viewers on a trip in both the literal and psychedelic sense of the word.

Although Moon’s filmmaking can be ascribed to the tradition of ethnographic documentaries, he departs from the classic “objective” anthropological approach. Instead, he invites viewers to partake in the experience “from within.” As Moon describes it, it is not about ‘sharing information, but rather about transmitting flows, capturing, and transforming energies into film.’ This is a filmmaking and film-performance that is meant to be intoxicating, immersing the viewer in the experience of a cinematic “contact high.”

With magical images and sounds from every corner of the earth, in collaboration with hundreds of communities worldwide, Moon’s live cinema performances weave together a tapestry of local cultures, natural elements, and spirits that evoke an ecodelic consciousness—a fusion of psychedelic mind expansion and ecological interconnectedness—offering a profound sensory experience of our shared destiny on planet earth.

Vincent Moon is a French multimedia artist, independent filmmaker, and sound designer. He was the principal director of Blogotheque’s Take Away Shows, a web-based project recording field works of indie rock music. After documenting rock music, he embarked on a world journey of documenting music and rituals for his label Collection Petites Planètes. His work as an audio-visual ethnographer has resulted in a vast collection of short films, music recordings, and full-length documentaries, among them Hibridos: Spirits of Brazil, made with Priscilla Telmon and released in 2017.

For fifteen years, Moon has traveled the globe with a camera, acting as a pilgrim and nomadic spiritual seeker, documenting and performing with his growing collection, which by now reached more than 1,200 films. Taking inspiration from mystical anarchism, Moon strongly adheres to a belief in Open Source, making all of his work available online for free at Vincentmoon.com.

Deeply influenced by shamanic and animistic traditions, Moon's live cinema performances are immersive, ritualistic, and ecstatic, often inducing altered states of perception. Using real-time mixing and editing techniques, he transforms his recordings into a vibrant "cosmic soup" that blends art, ritual, technology, and magic. Vincent Moon continues to push the boundaries of cinema, creating experiences that transcend traditional storytelling and immerse audiences in the spiritual and ecstatic realms of his subjects. His work is a testament to the power of film as a medium for spiritual exploration and transformation.
