Event details of The Sexed Being is Only Authorized by Themselves and a Few Others: on the inseparability of psychoanalysis and politics
Date
15 April 2025
Time
17:00 -19:00

How does psychoanalysis both align with and subvert gender binarism? In this presentation, we will discuss how the history of relations between sex and gender becomes sedimented in the psyche, as well as Jacques Lacan’s proposals that critique phallogocentrism. The so-called "non-existence of the sexual relationship" will serve as the starting point for introducing the process of sexuation as something that articulates the singular and the collective, thereby inescapably introducing the political dimension.

Pedro Ambra is a psychoanalyst and professor at the University of São Paulo and the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo. He is the author of several articles and books on the relationship between psychoanalysis, gender, and politics. Currently, he is conducting postdoctoral research on the incidence of social difference markers on the mental health of university students, funded by FAPESP.

History,  Subject and Territo-Reality: Brazilian perspectives on psychoanalysis
A seminar with Pedro Ambra and Clarice Pimentel Paulon

Wednesday, April 16: 17:00-20:00

At OMHP room A 009 (Oudemanhuispoort, 1012 CZ Amsterdam)

In-person only.
This seminar will present two convergent lines of discussion on psychoanalysis in contemporary times. On one hand, the consideration of History as a form of writing that must provoke perplexity in the face of the real will serve to present clinical practice through epistemological frameworks drawn from historiography. On the other hand, we will explore examples of new clinical forms of psychoanalysis in Brazil—such as collective listening with gravediggers, public clinics, and the so-called anthropophagy of Brazilian culture in the reception of Lacanism in the country.

The seminar requires previous registration, by April 14, and preparation of readings (email d.semerene@uva.nl to receive PDFs).  Students seeking 1 credit via NICA to participate in the seminar must send their name, institutional affiliation and program, institutional email address and student number by April 14 to: d.semerene@uva.nl

Clarice Pimentel Paulon is a psychologist and psychoanalyst, specialist in public health management. She holds a Master’s and a Ph.D. in Psychology from the University of São Paulo. She is a faculty member in the Graduate Program in Sexuality Education at São Paulo State University and a supervisor in the Psychiatry Residency Program of the São Paulo City Government.

These events are organized by the Queer Analysis Research Group and made possible with the support of ASCA and NICA.
